Vehicle Hoist Compliance

Public news

In early July, an MTA Member Alert was sent out to advise members that SafeWork SA inspectors were undertaking a combination of announced and unannounced visits of the Automotive Industry to audit the safety control measures in pace for vehicle hoists. Since that time, MTA have been informed that these are beginning to happen and a number of members have been contacted by SafeWork SA to arrange a visit.

During this awareness and compliance campaign, SafeWork SA will be looking for items such as recorded daily hoist inspections by their operator as well as evidence of annual inspections. Annual inspections should consist of:

  • detailed inspection of all structural and wear components
  • checking of tolerance for wear limits
  • checks for corrosion
  • non-destructive inspection of critical areas for evidence of cracking

Annual inspections should be carried out by a competent person. A competent person for inspection of vehicle hoists means a person who has acquired through training, educational or vocational qualifications in an engineering discipline relevant to the plant being inspected, the knowledge and skills to carry out the task. We recommend a utilising a third party provider who meets this competency requirement to carry out these inspections.

Members are able to purchase daily hoist log books and holders from our Business Partner, Lane Communications who can be contacted on orders.mta@laneprint.com.au or 8179 9907. Members receive a substantial discount and will be invoiced directly for these products. Here is the catalogue that contains these items: mta-lane-product-catalogue-2023.pdf (wpstaq-ap-southeast-2-media.s3.amazonaws.com)

In addition to these, SafeWork SA will be looking for evidence of design registration which should be located on the hoist itself, safe working load limits displayed, safety locks on vehicle hoist arms and a number of other items listed here: vehicle hoist self-assessment checklist

We advise members to complete an internal inspection using the above checklist to ensure you are able to pass SafeWork SA’s requirements. The MTA’s Workplace Relations Department are also able to complete full WHS site audits, including vehicle hoists, starting at the price of $890. If you would like the MTA to conduct a Workplace Health and Safety Audit, the MTA Workplace Relations Team is available to assist you.
